Less than a year ago Will, Adam and I were circling Zaventum airport, Brussels in a bid to find the car rental company and embark on the next leg of our adventure. We were filled with hope and excitement, much like the people there today will have been: be it the anticipation of returning home to their loved ones or the potential of a new trip.
The barbaric attacks this morning are just that. My heart goes out to the families of those who have been lost and I will hug Adam extra hard when he gets home tonight and Will when we see him on Wednesday. How easily that could be any one of us and, for whatever reason, it always resonates that little bit more when you have walked those halls yourself.
However, this is what these monsters want from us. They want us to fear travel, fear getting the tube to work or going about our everyday lives. They want to turn us against our fellow man, by hiding behind a religion whilst thwarting its very morals and belief system at every opportunity.
But to hide away.. to replace love with hate is to do a disservice to all those who have lost their lives in this ridiculous battle.
In only a few weeks time we will be returning (by air this time) to Austria for Adam to compete in his fourth marathon. When I am at the airport I will think of those people and their families and their friends. But I will not give in to the animals that caused their deaths or their grief.
I will not be afraid.
Life is too short.
